About Jeff
Sam Adkins’ son, Jeff, joined the company full time in 1992. Through his first-hand experience in all phases of custom home building, renovations and property management, Jeff learned the family tradition of fine workmanship and customer satisfaction. Upon his father’s death in September of 2003, Jeff assumed the responsibility of President, and a few years later, became sole owner of Sam Adkins Home Builders and continued the tradition of managing his family’s apartment complexes and townhouse units.
In 2009, Jeff partnered with Debbie Washburn to launch a flooring division of the company. Debbie’s Flooring has grown in sales every year since its inception. While the flooring business has really taken off, Jeff’s goal for Debbie’s Flooring is for it to maintain its hometown, personal attention feel.
A fair housing advocate, Jeff is a Governor’s appointee to Virginia’s Fair Housing Board, which investigates housing discrimination through the Virginia Fair Housing Office, and oversees an education-based certification program for housing providers. Jeff also is active in the community where he is chairman of the Martinsville-Henry County Democratic Committee.
In addition to being a Class A contractor, Jeff also has a bachelor’s degree in Economics and master’s in Education and Communications, both from the University of Maryland in College Park, Md., and is an avid reader. He has been able to use this education and love for knowledge to grow his business and coach and mentor at the high school level.
In 1993, Jeff became the head coach of the men’s basketball team at Carlisle School, where he has held this position for 20 years and has won six state championships. In 2012, he was named the head men’s basketball team coach for Martinsville High School, his alma mater, where he was a standout in basketball, winning two state championships and earning Virginia State Player of the Year and being named to the McDonald’s All-American team in 1981. Jeff is the first and only McDonald’s All-American from Martinsville-Henry County. Members of this All-American team included Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing and Chris Mullin.
Jeff is married to Kim Adkins, the former mayor of the City of Martinsville. They have two children, Jack and Claire.
